Jupiter Inlet District Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area Living Shoreline

Services

The Jupiter Inlet District (JID), in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management, aimed to develop a living shoreline project to stabilize a 600-linear foot section of shoreline along the south side of the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area (JILONA) property. Local currents combined with storm and boat-induced boat wakes have eroded the park’s shoreline affecting the native vegetation in this high energy environment. JID selected Taylor Engineering to collect baseline natural resource (e.g., wetlands, seagrass) and topographic/bathymetric data, develop an engineering design, secure state and federal regulatory authorizations, prepare bidding and construction documents, and provide construction administration and inspection services throughout the construction process.

The project featured low-crested, shore-parallel limestone breakwaters to attenuate wave energy, native vegetation plantings (grasses and mangroves) to stabilize the shoreline, and a timber observation pier with open-grated mesh decking to minimize impact to seagrass habitat.
