TERI and TLI at UNF

Mission

The mission of the Taylor Engineering Research Institute is to promote and support collaborative research between academia, private industry, and government in fields of coastal and water resources science and engineering.

Taylor Engineering Research Institute (TERI)

To exemplify the company’s values and commitment to technical excellence, Taylor Engineering joined the University of North Florida (UNF) and founded the Taylor Engineering Research Institute (TERI). A not-for-profit organization, TERI will perpetually fund, through interest and grants, research and development in coastal and water resource engineering and science at the UNF. Taylor Engineering donated $1 million to the University on behalf of the Institute. This contribution provides researchers in the industry, government, and academia a vehicle to advance knowledge in these disciplines and develop advanced tools to apply it.

Goals

“In recent years, researchers from UNF with funding from TERI have been investigating geomicrobial soil improvement as a sustainable method for shoreline stabilization. The concept of geomicrobial soil improvement is to use either naturally occurring bacteria or the enzymes they produce to start a chain reaction that ultimately results in calcium carbonate precipitation. The calcium carbonate makes the soil more erosion resistant, and the treatment relies solely on sustainable ingredients. UNF’s work is unique in the sense that they have been working on a “one-and-done” treatment technique/recipe where the shoreline would only need to be treated once because such a technique would be feasible in real-world applications. To date, researchers have adapted, optimized, and tested a recipe dubbed “Bioslurry” that appears to provide erosion protection for hurricane-strength storms based upon bench-scale experiments. This has led to several conference papers at Geo-Congress and two full-length journal articles in the Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering. Ongoing work includes securing funding to upscale Bioslurry treatments and test these larger-scale treatments under simulated real-world conditions.”

Taylor Leadership Institute (TLI)

The Taylor Leadership Institute (formerly known as the Institute for Values, Community & Leadership) was founded in 2010 through a shared vision between R. Bruce Taylor, III, Ph.D., P.E., former chairman of the UNF Board of Trustees and founder of Taylor Engineering, Inc., and Dr. Mauricio Gonzalez, former Vice President of UNF International and Student Affairs. Their objective was to create a leadership resource center for the UNF campus community.

TLI offers students, faculty, and the broader UNF community opportunities to excel in leadership education, development, and training. Through its high-impact programs, TLI promotes student retention, persistence, and successful graduation by facilitating both curricular and co-curricular leadership education. Emphasizing personal, civic, and community engagement, TLI provides rigorous and innovative programs that foster student leadership development. With a balanced approach, TLI combines theoretical leadership studies with practical, personal, and workforce applications to equip students for success.

TLI offers:

  • Leadership Minor
  • Annual Student Leadership Summit
  • Leadership Speakers Series
  • Mentorship Programs
Currently, Taylor Engineering staff participate in the TLI one-on-one career mentoring program for students pursuing a Leadership Minor as well as our leadership and UNF alumni speak at TLI events.
