Jupiter Inlet's north and south jetties - located in northern Palm Beach County, Florida - deteriorated over the years following the south jetty extension in 1996. The 2004 and 2005 hurricane seasons also significantly contributed to the loss of armor stone at both jetties. In response, Taylor Engineering assessed the jetties' condition and recommended the Jupiter Inlet District (JID) pursue adding new armor stone to both jetties. Taylor Engineering performed a coastal engineering assessment of design conditions and recommended three different stone gradations along the length of the jetty.
Restoration efforts included placement of approximately 11,700 tons of armor stone, removal of the souther wall cap of the north jetty, repair of concrete sheet pile cap, and repair and installation of the aluminum handrail. The total project cost approached $3.2 million. Project construction began November 1, 2006 and concluded in May 2007. Taylor Engineering provided construction observation, pay application, and troubleshooting services to JID throughout the project.
